Sports Clubs in Aachen The dream of human flight

Do they feel the solitude? Or does the adrenalin block out all thought? A quick glance at the 10-metre void below, and quite a few metres of water beyond.

University sports

  • for students, trainees and employees at Aachen Universities
  • much of the offerings are free to RWTH and FH Aachen students
  • around 500 courses
  • over 500 instructors
  • own indoor facilities, tennis courts, beach sports grounds, fitness centres, crossbike tracks and water sports centres

Can they hear the cheers? Do they feel the crowd holding its breath? The dive is a technical masterpiece – head-first into the water at 30 mph, yet leaving the surface immaculate.

One thing’s for sure: a high-diver needs a lot of courage, skill and precision. In this discipline, with its unique blend of aesthetic beauty and raw excitement, Aachen’s up there with the world’s finest. Its athletes enter world championships and the Olympic Games to compete against the world’s great sporting powers – and bring home medals time and again.

The dream of human flight is an old one – and in Aachen it sometimes comes true (for a moment) when pole-vaulters at the “Domspringen” event beside the cathedral power themselves skywards and appear to hover beautifully above this wonderful edifice.

CHIO, soccer and more sporting events

Whether flying through the air or with feet firmly on the floor, sport in Aachen really pulls in the crowds, and not just in the CHIO and Alemannia Aachen stadia either – even the city centre becomes a training course for our everyday sporting heroes. Each year, racing bikes fly through the middle of the old quarter around the cathedral and the City Hall, and during “Skater-Night” Aachen’s night-owls whoosh their way through the nocturnal city-centre on wheels. And you’d not be the first one to rub his or her eyes in disbelief during a New Year’s Eve brunch – didn’t Father Christmas just jog past the café? Actually, no. Just someone with a healthy sense of humour doing an early morning warm-up for the New Year’s Eve Run.

In Aachen, people meet up in over 260 clubs for sport and exercise. It means many things: competition training, a way of meeting people, getting a health check – or, simply, guaranteed fun. And sometimes a fleeting taste of human flight…
