Yet their “goal” is not on the field, but – literally – in a different dimension. They’re making a human pyramid on the floor of the Europa Room of the Eurogress Conference Centre, and one of them’s going to bag the summit!

“A game lasts for 90 minutes” and “the ball is round” – those are the basic rules of German soccer. And yet, as students and staff at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University and the Fraunhofer Institute of Production Technology (IPT) regularly demonstrate beyond doubt at the Aachen Machine Tool Colloquium, accepted rules can be questioned successfully. Traditionally, they put together the conference’s evening event themselves and take a sideways look at what goes on in the institute by way of sketches, attractions and musical performances – and up-to-the-minute issues like the European soccer championships are opportunities too good to miss.
