RWTH Aachen Campus Fit for the 21st century

Aachen, 2015. Students, teaching staff, scientists and entrepreneurs from across the world are learning and researching together on one of Europe’s biggest campus complexes.

The campus in figures:

  • Phase 1 (Melaten): 473,000 sqm.
  • Phase 2 (Aachen West railway station): 325,000 sqm.
  • Total area occupied by RWTH: 2.5 square km
  • Clusters: 19
  • Employees: 10,000
  • Businesses: up to 250
  • Invested capital: up to € 2 billion

Townsfolk are strolling through natural parkland which is also home to sympathetically-designed service facilities, R&D centres and technology businesses. Children are being looked after at the campus’ own daycare facility, contacts are being made in trendy restaurants, livelihoods are being earned at any one of the many high-tech businesses in the immediate vicinity, and the lecture hall is always just around the corner. Pedestrians and cyclists, too, from Aachen and surrounding area are enjoying the flair of “their” new Aachen suburb.

Huge project integrated into the life of the city itself

The RWTH Aachen Campus in the Seffent/Melaten/Westbahnhof part of town is a huge project set to change the face of both Aachen and its university. The area presently occupied by railway land and unmanaged natural surroundings is to give way to a campus featuring hotels, shops, apartments, offices and event amenities – not on a standalone site as per the Anglo-Saxon model, but integrated into the life of the city itself. An urban rail link will connect Melaten with Aachen West railway station which, in turn, will stretch through to the main RWTH building at Templergraben in the city centre – from which Pontstrasse is close at hand for some well-earned evening rest and relaxation. Aacheners are a social lot, no doubt, a few of them will also be drawn to campus events too.

Pie in the sky? The decision’s already been made: RWTH Aachen Campus is coming. This is a visionary project offering huge opportunities – for Aachen university, business, the city and its people.
